BeNeLuxMC 2016

BeNeLuxMC 2016

BeNeLuxMC 2016 Amsterdam, 22-23 March 2016

The Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap, the Belgian Mathematical Society and the Luxembourg Mathematical Society will jointly organize the BeNeLuxMC 2016 at the Science Park in Amsterdam. This congress will incorporate the 52nd Nederlands Mathematisch Congres. The local organization is in the hands of a team of mathematicians from the University of Amsterdam, the Centrum Wiskunde en Informatica and the Vrije Universiteit.

The program includes plenary lectures by Ellen Baake, James Maynard, who will give the Beeger lecture, and Stefaan Vaes. Semi-plenary lectures will be given by Johannes Nicaise, Ivan Nourdin and Mark Peletier.

The De Bruijn prize, established in honor of N.G. de Bruijn, will be awarded for the first time in 2016, and the prize winner, Marius Crainic, will give a semi-plenary lecture at the conference.

The "Docentendag" on March 22 has been recognised as an official schooling activity (6RU) for teachers.

Evening program on March 22

There will be an exciting evening program on March 22 at the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen, including public lectures by Marcus du Sautoy and Ionica Smeets. These lectures are open to the general public, and are included for participants of the conference.

Lectures by Prof. Marcus du Sautoy and Prof. Ionica Smeets

Date: March 22nd, 2016
Time: 17:00-18:30
Location: Royal Tropical Institute, Mauritskade 63, Amsterdam (at the Tropenmuseum)
Costs for non-participants of the conference: 15 euros

Ionica: "Numbers don’t lie, but they are excellent for concealing the truth. I will take you into a world of paradoxes, misleading graphs and weird logic."

Marcus: "I will explore the hidden mathematical ideas that underpin the creative output of well-known artists and reveal that the work of the mathematician is also driven by strong aesthetic values."

Marcus du Sautoy (University of Oxford) and Ionica Smeets (Leiden University) both are mathematicians and professors in science communication. Marcus has written multiple books on mathematics for a general audience, the most famous perhaps being The Music of the Primes. His most recent book is The Num8er My5teries. Ionica is famous for the Wiskundemeisjes blog and her columns in the Volkskrant, as well as various books on science such as Het exacte verhaal.

Ionica and Marcus each will give a lecture on mathematics for all who have some interest in mathematics or would like to understand why other people might. Questions from the audience are very welcome.

The lectures at the Tropical Institute are organised as part of the BeNeLux Mathematical Congress 2016, but are open to everybody (at a 15 euro entrance fee).

To register for the lectures for a general audience by Ionica Smeets and Marcus du Sautoy please click on `Registration form' on the left, and check the box 'Public talks in Tropenmuseum for non-participants of the congres'.
